From Planning to Parenting: My First 30 Days as a Father
Hey everyone! Welcome back to my blog. It has been a couple of months since my last post because life got very busy. As you can tell from the title, I became a dad for the first time!
My daughter is officially one month old today. Now that I am getting back to work, I want to start writing again. Today, I want to share what my first 30 days as a father were really like.
Day 1 vs. Day 30: When the Blueprint Meets Reality
Our story started in November 2025 during a trip to Dharamshala, where we found out the good news. As soon as we got home, we went to the doctor to plan for the next nine months.
The first few months were tricky, but our doctor helped us through them. My wife and I read books and watched videos every week to learn about the baby’s growth. By week 38, the doctor said the baby could arrive any day. We rushed to get everything ready – buying baby clothes, stocking up on diapers, and packing our hospital bag.
I watched a lot of YouTube videos about how to be a helpful dad. I felt super confident that I could handle it all. But I was wrong! Watching a video is easy, but caring for a real human baby is completely different because every baby is unique.
In week 39, we went to the hospital for an induction, but things didn’t go as planned. After 20 long hours, the doctor said a C-section was necessary.
We knew C-sections were safe, but it was still hard to watch my wife in so much pain during those hours. I felt completely helpless.
Finally, on the evening of July 27th, the nurse came out and said, “It’s a girl!” All my confidence turned into pure emotion. I was so happy I didn’t even know what to say.
The nurse told me both mother and baby were doing great. Standing there waiting for my wife to come out of the surgery room felt like a dream. We had waited nine months for this moment, and it was finally happening.
Three days later, it was time to go home. I spent the day paying bills and decorating the car. But when I turned on the engine with my new family inside, I got super nervous! I drove very slowly – only 40 km/h on a 60 km/h road – just to be extra safe.
When we got home, we thought we were fully prepared. But then we hit our first problem: choosing the right formula milk! There were so many brands, and we wanted only the best for our baby.
We also faced surprise problems, like the night our daughter had a bad tummy ache. She kept crying, and we had no idea what to do until we found a special tummy roll gel that helped her.
Now that 30 days have passed, I can finally understand what her cries mean. Knowing what she needs keeps me calm and helps me be a better dad.
The Daily Systems: Building Routines Out of 2 AM Chaos
From day one, my wife had a natural instinct that helped her stay awake at night. I struggled a lot during the first few weeks, but now I’m writing this blog post at 1:30 AM without feeling sleepy at all! We made a rule to work in shifts: when one person sleeps, the other looks after the baby.
Here is a big tip for new parents: track your time! We keep track of everything, like feeding the baby every 3 hours and changing her diaper every 3 to 4 hours. (Fun fact: Pampers diapers have a yellow line that turns blue when it’s time for a change! I had no idea about this before.)
We also had to deal with “cluster feeding.” That’s when the baby wants to eat every 30 to 60 minutes instead of every 3 hours. It only lasted a few days, but it was very tiring.
Slowly, we found our rhythm. Life isn’t perfect, but it is much better than the first week. My advice to new parents is simple: don’t follow anyone’s advice blindly. Test things out and find what works for your own baby.
The Internal Shift: Facing the Heavy Emotions of Fatherhood
Even though I tried to prepare myself, I still ask myself every day: Am I being a good enough dad?
Fatherhood is exciting, but it brings big feelings. Ever since she was born, I have become very protective of her. Sometimes I even argue with people if I feel their advice isn’t safe for my baby.
Even with all the stress, I love being a dad. Every time she smiles or looks at me, my heart melts. Parenthood teaches you to celebrate the small happy moments instead of waiting for big ones.
Holding my own baby feels like a dream. It has brought my wife and me closer together and made us a stronger team.
The Schedule Reset: Realigning Work, Energy, and Focus
Managing time with a baby is hard work. I used to work whenever I wanted. Now, I have to make sure the baby is fed and has a clean diaper before I do anything else.
I had to stop doing things that waste time. I stopped going on random shopping trips and paused playing weekend cricket. My energy needs to go to what matters most right now: my family.
The First Milestone: What 30 Days Taught Me About Growth
If the first month taught me anything, it’s that being a father isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about being there for your child and adapting when things change.
In the beginning, you just have to go with the flow. Over time, you can build a routine that works for your baby and your work. Even though you want to spend every second with your baby, taking a small break to rest is important so you have energy for the next day.
Lastly, we decided to avoid screen time around the baby from week one. If you don’t want your child using phones all the time, you have to set a good example. I made a rule for myself: no phones between 10 PM and 5 AM unless it’s for urgent work.
These first 30 days have been an amazing start to a long journey. I would love to hear your thoughts, tips, or experiences in the comments below!
See you in the next blog post! Maybe I will plan a road trip with my daughter in coming months and will share the experience with you all, till then read my road trip blog from Chandigarh to Rishikesh.
